WHAT IS THE ACT TEST?
The ACT (American College Testing) exam is a nationally recognized standardized test used in college admissions. It consists of multiple-choice sections in English, Math, Reading, and Science, along with an optional Writing section.
A high ACT score can be a determining factor for college acceptance and merit-based scholarships, making focused preparation essential for students aiming for top-tier universities.
ACT SECTIONS
The ACT is divided into four required sections plus an optional Writing test:
English: Evaluates grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills through passage-based multiple-choice questions.
Reading: Tests comprehension and critical analysis across literature, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences.
Math: Covers algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data analysis. A calculator is allowed for all math questions, making problem-solving strategies essential.
Science: Measures scientific reasoning, data interpretation, and analytical skills, focusing on graphs, research studies, and experimental trends.
Optional 40-minute Writing Test: Requires students to analyze an issue, compare multiple perspectives, and construct a well-supported argument. Some colleges require the Writing test as part of their admissions process.
Vogel Prep’s ACT tutoring in Tempe helps students master each section of the exam, improving both their content knowledge and test-taking skills.
HOW LONG IS THE ACT TEST?
The ACT exam lasts 2 hours and 55 minutes, excluding breaks. If students take the optional Writing test, the total test time extends to 3 hours and 35 minutes. Since pacing is critical, Vogel Prep’s Tempe ACT tutoring teaches students effective time management strategies to complete the test efficiently and accurately.
ACT TEST SCORING
Each section of the ACT is scored on a 1-36 scale, and the final composite score is the average of all four sections. The optional Writing test is scored separately on a 2-12 scale.
A strong ACT score improves college admissions chances and increases eligibility for scholarships and merit-based financial aid.
ACT VS. SAT TEST: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Both the ACT and SAT are widely accepted by colleges, but they differ in format, content, and pacing. The ACT includes a Science section, while the SAT does not, and it allows a calculator for all Math questions, unlike the SAT, which has a no-calculator math section. ACT questions are generally more direct, whereas the SAT emphasizes complex problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Additionally, the ACT is faster-paced, requiring students to manage their time effectively to complete all sections. Not sure which test is best for your child? Vogel Prep helps students evaluate their strengths and academic goals to determine whether the ACT or SAT is the right fit for their college aspirations.
