WHAT IS THE ACT TEST?
The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It assesses a student’s readiness for college-level coursework by evaluating their skills in English, math, reading, science, and writing. Many universities use ACT scores in their admission decisions, making high performance on the ACT essential for competitive applications.
ACT SECTIONS
The ACT consists of four required sections and an optional writing test:
English: Tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills.
Reading: Assesses comprehension and interpretation of short passages.
Math: Covers algebra, geometry, and some trigonometry.
Science: Focuses on data analysis, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving.
Optional 40-minute Writing Test: Evaluates analytical writing and argumentation skills.
HOW LONG IS THE ACT TEST?
The ACT test takes approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes, including breaks. Without the optional writing section, the exam lasts 2 hours and 55 minutes.
ACT TEST SCORING
The ACT is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with each section receiving an individual score. The composite score is the average of the four required section scores. Colleges use this score to evaluate student performance and admissions eligibility.
ACT VS. SAT TEST: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Both the ACT and SAT assess college readiness, but key differences exist:
ACT includes a science section; SAT does not.
ACT math allows a calculator for all questions; SAT has a no-calculator section.
ACT questions are more straightforward, while the SAT involves more reasoning-based problems.
ACT is faster-paced, with more questions in a shorter time frame.
