The choices made in high school and later in college will set a person’s life’s journey.  The type of skills and jobs that we do right out of college will be impacted by the subjects studied as undergraduates.  Studying physics will empower individuals because they will be able to understand how the world that surrounds them works.

  1. Learn how things work. The study of mechanics, electricity, optics, and thermodynamics allows you to explore the principles at work behind modern technology.

  2. Improve your skills in math and logic. Reasoning with basic physical concepts is the first step to solving any physics problem, and mathematical proficiency is needed to get to the answer.

  3. Learn more history. The contributions to physics of people like Galileo and Einstein have helped to shape world events. Learning about their discoveries will give you a deeper understanding of history.

  4. Do science! Physics labs present an opportunity to engage the scientific method and test for yourself whether physics is effective at describing the real world.

  5. Enhance your college application. Taking an AP physics test or SAT Subject Test in physics in high school is a great way to distinguish yourself from all the other students who apply for admission to your favorite colleges.

  6. Prepare for a variety of careers. Many professional physicists work in highly competitive and demanding academic jobs doing fundamental science research, but the study of physics also leads to careers in engineering, education, information technology, medicine, law, and finance.

  7. Challenge yourself. Physics is a notoriously difficult subject, and to learn it requires dedication and effort.  This makes it even more satisfying when you succeed!

  8. Physics is fun! Solving physics problems often feels like playing a game where the rules are the laws of nature. If you enjoy solving jigsaw puzzles or brain teasers then you will probably think physics is fun.

  9. Esthetics. The laws of physics have a certain beauty and elegance which you can only appreciate if you study them and use them to solve problems.

  10. Be part of an elite group of professionals. The US today has a deficit of qualified physics graduates that could turn into high school physics teachers. As a high school physics teacher, you could train the youth and propel our economy. You could ensure that our country remains competitive in a highly technological world.
