Time to Begin the Hunt for Scholarships and Grants
by Dr. Montye P. Fuse
For many high school seniors, the college application season is drawing to an end. With few exceptions, most application deadlines will close with the start of the new calendar year. Students who did not apply for early application plans now face, perhaps, the most stressful part of the college application process: Waiting for admissions decisions.
On the parent side of things, the question “How do we pay for college” is often front of mind. As families await decisions in March, now is the time to fully engage the search for scholarships. If families submitted the FAFSA, students will receive a financial aid offer with their offer of admission. Private scholarships and grants can fill the gap between the financial aid offer and the cost of attendance. Each year estimates are that billions of dollars in scholarship and grant support go unclaimed. As your student awaits his or her decision or prepares to enroll in an in-state university, spring is scholarship search and grant application season!
